Dustin Diamond was an American standup comedian and actor who made his name as an actor in
Saved by the Bell, where he was much beloved as Samuel Powers.
The son of parents who worked in the computer industry, Diamond never wanted to be involved in computers. Instead, he got into acting while still very young, as between 1987 and 1989, he acted in
Good Morning, Miss Bliss.
Diamond's portrayal of the socially awkward and quirky nerd Samuel Powers would earn him massive popularity. He would act the character for more than a dozen years as he reprises the role in
The New Class and
The College Years.
As he transitioned into his young adult years, leaving the Samuel Powers character became too difficult. He tried a range of endeavors including standup comedy, music and appearances in
Made and Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star
Dustin Diamond was cast in
Celebrity Boxing 2 and
Celebrity Fit Club, in which he courted a lot of controversy. In 2006, he found himself in the eye of the media once again with allegations of a racy tape and the publication of
Behind the Bell, his tell-all memoir.
In January 2021, he began chemotherapy after he was diagnosed with small-cell carcinoma in his lung. The treatment was unsuccessful since he was already in stage 4, and he died aged 44, shortly after the discovery of his condition.
In 2009, Dustin Diamond published his memoir detailing his experiences working on the series
Saved by the Bell.
Diamond shares about the happenings on set and the behavior of his castmates, including the dating drama, the wild lifestyles, partying, and drugs. He also tells of how much he struggled to avoid being stereotyped in his roles as he tried to reinvent himself through reality TV and standup comedy.
It was a controversial book upon publication, with Diamond later acknowledging that he got a ghostwriter to add in many of the scandalous details while his castmates denied any involvement in salacious activities.
