One of the best parts of a Dick Francis novel, was the first line, first paragraph, and first page in general. They hook you right from the start, and get you interested in finding out what happens next.
The way the heroes each end up getting that fire in the belly, once their sense of injustice is sufficiently aroused. Many of Dick’s heroes were just ordinary guys with a keen sense of morality. And they end up being more resourceful and courageous than they, or their enemies, would have believed themselves to be.
The books always are centered around the horse racing world in some way, too, which is an often overlooked world in fiction.
I had no idea what to expect when I first dipped my toes into Dick’s work. I saw a review a year ago that suggested that most of Dick’s books had a connection to horse racing.
I did not believe the review because I couldn’t understand how an author could consistently tell stories in the mystery genre about horse racing.
But clearly, I was wrong because all the books I’ve read thus far have a horse racing component. Also, they are immensely entertaining. Yes, some of his characters are current or former jockeys. But others are just ordinary people working within or around the horse racing industry.
I am learning so much about horses and horse racing from these books. Normally, I am skeptical of the real-world information authors include in their novels. But Dick was a steeplechase jockey, so he knows what he’s talking about.
One of the few authors I can read all of their books over and over.
