Dian Fossey

Dian Fossey was born on January 16th, 1932. Dian passed away December 26th, 1985 at 53 years old. Dian Fossey was born in San Francisco, California, United States.

Dian Fossey was an American conservationist and primatologist who did a lot of research on mountain gorillas from 1966 until she was killed in 1985.

Her journey into mountain gorilla research was sparked by a profound encounter that ignited a lifelong love for these majestic creatures. Before this, she had a career as an occupational therapist and later worked in children’s hospitals.

In 1963, Dian Fossey moved to Africa, where she met Louis Leakey. At some point, she accepted a call from Leakey to go to Virunga Volcano in Rwanda to study the endangered mountain gorillas.

In 1967, she founded the Karisoke Research Center between Mt. Bisoke and Mt. Karisimbi, where she spent years habituating the gorillas to her presence. Through observations, she collected data on their maternal bonds, habits, social structure, and communications as she challenged myths about their aggression.

In 1977, Digit, her favourite gorilla, was killed by poachers, and this led her toward intensifying her advocacy for conservation and anti-poaching efforts. Despite her publications and academic credentials, she became known primarily as a campaigner and protector.

Her unwavering dedication to her cause is evident in her decision to return to Rwanda, despite the risks. Tragically, she was found dead near her campsite in 1985, a stark reminder of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of conservation.

In her work, Gorillas in the Mist, Dian Fossey provides an account of her experiences working with mountain gorillas in the Virunga Mountains over thirteen years.

Fossey tells how she founded the Karisoke Research Center and gradually built trust with the gorillas, enabling her to observe their social behaviours, including play, nurturing, conflict, and grooming.

The work also explores the threats gorillas face from habitat loss and poachers, as she describes finding devastated troops, snares, and the loss of Digit, her favourite gorilla.

Her work is not just a narrative of natural history, but a compelling call to action for conservation. It underscores that the survival of gorillas is not solely determined by nature, but by the decisions and actions of humanity.
