Desmond Bagley
Desmond Bagley was born on October 29th, 1923. Desmond passed away April 12th, 1983 at 59 years old. Desmond Bagley was born in Kendal, Westmorland, England.
Desmond Bagley was a British novelist and journalist best known for a series of bestselling thriller novels. His books have been translated into more than 20 languages. He helped establish some basic conventions of the genre: this resourceful and tough, yet essentially ordinary hero that is pitted against villains determined to sow chaos and destruction so they can advance their agenda.
His first published short story was published in
Argosy magazine, in 1957, while his first novel, called
The Golden Keel was published in 1962. During that time, he was a film critic for
Rand Daily Mail in Johannesburg from 1958-1962.
The success of his debut novel allowed him to become a full time novelist by the mid-1960s. He rarely used recurring characters whose adventures unfolded over multiple books. Max Stafford, the security consultant in
Windfall and
Flyaway, is a notable exception.
He also published some short stories. When he was not traveling to research some of the exotic backgrounds for his novels, he enjoyed spending his time motorboating and sailing. He loved films and classical music, playing war games, and military history.
High Citadel tells the story of when Tim O’Hara’s plane gets hijacked and is forced to crash land in the middle of the Andes, his troubles have just begun.
This heavily armed group of communist soldiers intent on murdering one of his passengers, who is an influential political figure, have got their orders to leave no survivors behind. Isolated in the biting cold of the Andes, O’Hara’s party must fight for their very lives with just the most primitive weapons at their disposal.
Landslide is about a geologist named Bob Boyd, and he is just as resilient as the British Columbia timber country where he works for the powerful Matterson Corporation. However his real past and name are both mysteries, having been wiped out by the accident which almost killed him.
Then he reads this name that opens this door in his memory: Trinavant. He learns that Bull Matterson and his son are willing to do just about anything in order to keep the Trinavant family forgotten forever.
Flyaway stars Max Stafford, a security consultant. But why was he beaten up in his own office? What’s the secret behind the Lockheed Lodestar, the famous 1930s aircraft? And just why has Paul Bilson (an accountant) vanished in North Africa?
The journey to the Sahara desert becomes a race to save Paul Bilson, a race to locate the buried aircraft, and above all else: to return alive.
