Daniel L. Everett

Daniel L. Everett was born on July 26th, 1951 and is currently 74 years old. Daniel L. Everett was born in Holtville, California, United States. Everett attended The University of Campinas where he received an M.A. and PhD.

Daniel L. Everett is an author and linguist from the United States who made his name for his works and research working in the Amazon basin. For several years, he lived among the Piraha and studied their language and culture.

Everett was raised near the Mexican border and initially worked as a Christian missionary. In 1977, he traveled with his young family to Brazil, where he began working with the Piraha tribe. As a missionary, he wanted to work with the Piraha to translate the bible into the local language.

Over several years, Daniel Everett studied the language of the Piraha, and his findings seemed to poke holes in the universal grammar theory as proposed by Noam Chomsky. The language did not have nested sentence structures or recursion, which were core in Chomsky’s theory.

The finding challenged long-accepted theories on language and sparked considerable debate in the field of linguistics. In 2005, he published a paper titled Cultural Constraints on Grammar and Cognition in Piraha. In the paper, he asserted that culture, rather than biology, shapes grammar.

Daniel L. Everett works at Bentley University as a Trustee Professor of Cognitive Sciences. He was dean of Sciences and Arts from 2010 to 2018. Before that, he worked at the linguistics departments of the University of Pittsburgh and Illinois State University, in addition to teaching at the University of Manchester and in Brazil.

In his books, Everett combines cultural insight, adventure, linguistic fieldwork, and personal experience to create a unique blend.

In his debut work, Don’t Sleep, There Are Snakes, he wrote a work that was both a study of the Pirahá and a memoir.

He had arrived in Brazil with his wife and children as a missionary, hoping to translate the Bible into the local language. Instead, he became fascinated with the Piraha culture and language. He also learned that the language had no concept of property or war, no stories of the past, no set terms for colors, and no words for numbers.

Everett was so impressed by the Piraha and their worldview that he soon lost his faith as a Christian and became a linguist.

In Language: The Cultural Tool, which he published in 2012, challenged the idea that language is a characteristic of the human brain.

Everett argued that language is more of a tool of culture shaped, invented, and often lost by societies. He drew on his work with the Wari and Piraha of the Amazon to demonstrate how meaning and grammar differ significantly across cultures.

Combining psychology, anthropology, linguistics, and philosophy, he demonstrates how language reflects cultural values and human experience.

In 2017, Daniel L. Everett published the work How Language Began, in which he studied the biological and cultural roots of human language.

He argues that most languages are not innate but rather have evolved over a million years through human innovation. Drawing inspiration from 10 millennia of history and decades of fieldwork with the hunter-gatherers of the Amazon, he challenges established theories of universal grammar.

It is a work that combines personal anecdotes with science to demonstrate how language enabled humans to become the dominant species on the planet.
