I have never been one for reading novels in order as I prefer to get recommendations and read reviews before deciding on what to read.
My best Dale Brown techno thriller is Air Battle Force which like most of the author’s work has the fast action on the ground and in the air as the protagonists make use of a large arsenal of futuristic hardware.
Hammerheads is an exciting techno thriller that focuses on the drug war rather than the Cold War. It is quite the change as Brown writes about a narcotics cartel that hires renegade Cubans to protect their drug shipments. But I loved how the Hammerheads come in using the latest in surveillance techniques to deal with the situation.
Another of my favorite Dale Brown novels is Warrior Class which showcases his raw enthusiasm for the bolts and nuts of military hardware. In this novel he wrote some combat whopper of a story featuring Patrick McLanahan the devil dare pilot I have come to love.
I once knew a guy that loved planes. He would go on and on about the subject until it sickened me. I never took an interest in aeronautics. However, so much of what he said stuck with me that I couldn’t help but chuckle every time I saw jargon in ‘Flight of the Old Dog’ that I actually understood.
I cannot help but wonder whether I would have loved the novel if the aeronautics terminology was completely alien to me. I think Dale Brown’s writing is strong enough that the story would have appealed to me all the same.
Strangely enough, I started visiting and skimming aeronautics websites after finishing ‘Flight of the Old Dog.’ The field is far more interesting than I realized.
I’ve loved every single novel by Dale Brown over the years, however am really struggling with Weapons of Opportunity, just can’t engage with the story line, it is such a departure from what I was seeking. Keen to understand if I’m alone.
