Charles W. Colson

Charles W. Colson (Charles Wendell Colson) was born on October 16th, 1931. Charles passed away April 21st, 2012 at 80 years old. Charles W. Colson was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Colson attended Brown University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and George Washington University where he received a JD degree.

Charles W. Colson is a native of Boston, Massachusetts, who got into politics in his teens as he worked as a volunteer for a gubernatorial campaign.

In 1953, he joined the Marines and rose through the ranks and leaving as Captain in 1955. He then moved to the Department of the Navy as a civilian for a brief stint before he got a job with Senator Leverett Saltonstall in 1956. It was while he was working for the senator that he met Richard Nixon, who was then Vice President.

During the presidential campaign of 1968, he worked with Nixon, and when he won, he was rewarded with an appointment to the post of Special Counsel to the President. Even though he had a meteoric rise in his political career, it all came apart following the Watergate Scandal.

After pleading guilty to obstruction of justice and other related offences, he was sentenced to three years in prison and served seven months.

Following his time in prison, Charles Colson had a religious transformation. He became the founder of Justice Fellowship and the Prison Fellowship Ministries, which focused on criminal justice reform and Christian outreach. Colson was also a prolific author with more than 30 titles to his name.

For his efforts, he won many awards, including the 2008 Presidential Citizens Medal.

Loving God, which Charles Colson published in 1983, explores what being a Christian means.

Drawing from his experiences, accounts from history, and the Bible, he asserts that Christianity is more than just emotion. He believes that a true Christian is seen in acts of service, repentance, and obedience to the Bible and what it teaches.

Colson urges Christians to surrender everything they have and all that they are to God’s will through actions such as pursuing holiness in their daily living and service to others, even when it sometimes requires huge personal sacrifices.

Earlier in 1975, Colson had published Born Again, a memoir in which he showcased his journey from hatchet man to President Nixon to committed Christian and advocate for prison reform.

Following his indictment for his involvement in the Watergate Scandal. He had a spiritual awakening after he read Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis and was introduced to a variety of Christian teachings by a friend.

He then pleaded guilty to the charges, and when he was released, he went on to become an advocate of criminal justice reform and the founder of a prison fellowship.

Another work by Charles Colson was the 1979 publication Life Sentence, which happens to be his second work.

The book is a reflection of the challenges he had dealing with systemic issues in the justice system and founding a Christian ministry. Chronicling what he achieved, it is a testament to how one man can be the beacon of hope and advocate of change that the most marginalized need.
