Caroline Blackwood (Caroline Maureen Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood) was born on July 16th, 1931. Caroline passed away February 14th, 1996 at 64 years old. Caroline Blackwood was born in London, England.
Caroline Blackwood was famous as a journalist and socialite, who had a lot of influence on society particularly in the arts. As a writer, she became known for writing with intelligence and wit, as she told stories inspired by her experiences growing up.
She came from a family of privilege as her parents were noblemen from the United Kingdom. According to Blackwood, she received very little education during her schooling years. She would then work as a secretary for
Hulton Press before she got into reporting.
In 1953, Caroline Blackwood got married to Lucian Freud, the artist, and soon became a well-known figure in the bohemian circles of London. She posed for several portraits that Lucian her husband painted, even as she studied the works of Francis Bacon the painter, and the vision of Freud.
Blackwood would become a contributor to the
London Magazine, Encounter, and other periodicals during the 1960s. During this time, she used to focus on themes such as New York free schools, beatniks, feminist theatre, and Ulster sectarianism.
At some point, Caroline began dating the American co-editor and founder of
The New York Review of Books, Robert Silvers. But she would then get married to Robert Lowell the American poet, who was a significant influence on her career as a novelist, as he encouraged her to write her debut.
In 1984, Caroline Blackwood published
Corrigan, a morality play that features the widow Mrs. Blunt, who is increasingly frail.
Nadine, her daughter, rarely visits and when she does the encounters are usually very uneasy. But one day, a wheelchair-bound and very charming Irish man arrives at her door looking for charitable contributions and it is not long before he has her off her feet causing her daughter to panic.
In 1974, Blackwood published
The Fate of Mary Rose, which tells the story of a family whose ten-year-old daughter was raped and then brutally murdered. The author invites her readers to witness the devastating and macabre effects of the murder on the family.
