Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen (Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen) was born on September 23rd, 1949 and is currently 75 years old. Bruce Springsteen was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, USA. Springsteen attended Ocean County College.
Bruce Springsteen is a songwriter, singer, and guitarist. He is a pioneer of heartland rock, combining poetic and socially conscious lyrics that reflect working class life with commercially successful rock. He’s known for his energetic concerts (which can last past 4 hours) and descriptive lyrics.
In 1964, he saw the Beatles on
The Ed Sullivan Show. Inspired, he bought a guitar at the Western Auto Appliance store for $18.95. After this, he began playing for audiences with a band called the Rogues at local venues, including the Elks Lodge in Freehold.
Later that same year, his mom took out a loan in order to buy him a $60 Kent guitar, an act that he later memorialized in “The Wish”. He went to the home of Tex and Marion Vinyard, who sponsored young bands. They helped him become the guitarist and one of the lead singers of the Castiles, this band that recorded two original songs at this public recording studio in Brick Township.
After appearing in numerous bands during the 60s and into the 70s, he put together a band that would become known as the E Street Band, although the name wasn’t used until September of 1974. It was also during this time that he acquired his “the Boss” nickname, because he took the task on of collecting his band’s pay every night and distributing it to his band.
Born to Run was inspired by Bruce’s 2009 performance at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. It was such an exhilarating experience that he decided he’d write all about it. This how such an extraordinary memoir started.
In the 7 years that followed, he privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing the same humor, honesty, and originality found in his songs to his autobiography.
He describes growing up Catholic in Freehold, New Jersey, amid all the danger, poetry, and darkness which fueled his own imagination, leading up to the moment he refers to as “The Big Bang”: seeing Elvis’s debut on
The Ed Sullivan Show. Bruce vividly recounts his relentless drive to becoming a musician, his early days as a bar band king in Asbury Park, and the E Street Band’s rise. With disarming candor, he tells the story of the personal struggles which inspired some of his best work, and shows us why the song Born to Run reveals even more than we’d previously realized.
This is going to be a revelatory read for anybody that’s enjoyed Bruce’s music, however it’s so much more than a legendary rock star’s memoir. It’s a book for kids and parents, dreamers and workers, loners and lovers, freaks, artists, or anybody who’s ever wanted to be baptized in the holy river of rock n roll.
