Bill Cunningham was a fashion photographer for
The New York Times, and was best known for his street and candid photography.
Bill had his first exposure to the fashion world when he was a stockboy in Bonwit Teller’s Boston Store. He later said that his interest in fashion started in church. He couldn’t ever concentrate on the Sunday church services since he’d be concentrating on all of the women’s hats.
He was a Harvard University dropout, and first became known as a designer of women’s hats before moving on to writing about fashion for
Chicago Tribune and
Women’s Wear Daily.
While in New York, he made hats under the name of William J, after he quit his advertising job at Bonwit Teller.
Bill worked for Chez Ninon, which made line-for-line duplicates of designs for Dior, Chanel, and Givenchy. His clients during the 50s included Rebekah Harkness, Katharine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Jacqueline Bouvier.
Bill began taking candid photos while on the streets of New York City, and his work came to the attention of
The New York Times with a capture of Greta Garbo in an unguarded moment in 1978. He reported for the paper from 1978 until 2016.
Fashion Climbing: A Memoir with Photographs is the untold tale of a New York City legend’s education in style and creativity.
For Bill, NYC was the land of glamour, freedom, and, above all, style. Growing up in lace-curtain Irish suburb of Boston, secretly trying his sister’s dresses on and spending his evenings after school in the chicest boutiques in the city, he dreamed about a life dedicated to fashion. However his desires were a source of shame for his entire family, and after he dropped out of Harvard, he needed to fight them tooth-and-nail to pursue his love.
This is the story about a young man striving to be the person he was meant to be: a true original. However despite being one of the city’s most treasured and recognized figures, Bill was also one of its most guarded. Written with his one-of-a-kind voice and infectious joy, this memoir was neatly typewritten, polished, and safely stored away during his lifetime. Held off from sharing it, and himself, until he died. Between both covers is an education on style, an effervescent story of a bohemian world like it used to be, and was a last gift to readers of one of New York’s great characters.
