Carlisle first came into the limelight during the 1980s when she used to play instruments and lead singing for
The Go-Go’s. In 1981, they released their debut album
Beauty and the Beat, which spent half a dozen weeks at number one on the charts before selling more than a million copies with their second album.
However, the success did not last as drug use, health problems, internal tensions, and disputes with their record label took their toll. In 1985, the band broke up after
Talk Show, their third album, experienced lukewarm sales.
In 1986, Belinda Carlisle went solo and released the self-titled album
Belinda. However, it was with her second and third albums,
Runaway Horses in 1989 and
Heaven on Earth in 1987, that she would become a major star. During the 1990s, the lack of label support and the rise of grunge slowed down her career.
Despite dropping out of the spotlight in the United States, Belinda Carlisle was still huge in Europe, where she still sold out stadiums. At present, she occasionally performs and records with
The Go-Gos and solo, even though she prefers the more tranquil home life rather than being in the rough and tumble of entertainment.

Playboy at age 43 and also appeared in the 1984 film
Swing Shift.
