Andrew Blackbird
Andrew Blackbird was born in 1814. Andrew passed away in 1908 at 94 years old. Andrew Blackbird was born in L'Arbe Croche, Michigan, USA.
Andrew Blackbird was best known as a Native American advocate and leader who became famous for his cultural and historical contributions to his tribe.
During his time, Blackbird was a principal historian and leader of the Odawa Indians. He had the distinction of being the first postmaster of Harbor Springs and the author of an 1887 book about the history of the Chippewa and Ottawa Indians of Michigan.
Andrew had his name Anglicized by U.S. Indian agents during the early 1820s. His father, who was called "
Black Hawk," somehow became "Blackbird" and this would become the family name. His father’s harrowing experience when he was left stranded on a deserted island by white traders deeply affected Andrew as a kid.
He was baptized into Roman Catholicism in 1825, even though he would later become a protestant and worked at the L’Arbre Croche-based protestant mission as an interpreter. Even though he was a full-fledged Christian, he still had a lot of knowledge about the traditional religious beliefs and practices of the Ottawa.
When he was 14, he moved to Wisconsin where he lived with white fishermen and farmers. He would then work in Grand Traverse as a government blacksmith before he returned home in 1850 to take care of his ailing father. It was during this time that he also worked to help his tribe gain citizenship.
By the 1850s, Andrew was a counselor between the Ojibwa and the Ottawa in their talk with the American government. He was successful in helping many defend annuity and land ownership claims and got many Native American veterans their pensions.
Andrew lived in a house he bought in Harbor Springs, Michigan until his death in 1908. The city of Harbor Springs bought the house and turned it into the Andrew J. Blackbird Museum.
History of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan is a historical work that offers a lot of information about the many unjust situations the American Indians have gone through.
Andrew Blackbird also throws in some personal tragedies in addition to chronicling his personal family history back in time. He also asserts that the Ottawa used to live in a very organized society with well-established agricultural practices.
