I don’t like reading Bentley Little’s books. It isn’t his fault. And in a way, my revulsion to his work is a sign that he has succeeded. I read ‘The Store’ because I wanted to expand my reading horizons.
Was it beautifully written? Yes, it was. Did it disturb me beyond all measure? Yes, it did. I jumped to ‘The Association’, which did the same thing. The writing was exquisite, but the visuals Bentley described stayed with me.
I guess it’s my fault. Clearly, horror isn’t my cup of tea. But I keep reading it. Well, that isn’t true. I keep reading Bentley Little’s stories specifically. I bought the ‘Walking Alone’ collection the other day after seeing it on this list.
I can’t help it. Bentley’s writing is highly engaging. I don’t have the stomach for the genre, but I can still wring a modicum of enjoyment out of Bentley’s stories.
