Every Crooked Place was the first novel I’ve read of Mary Kay’s, and when I was finished, I knew that it wouldn’t be the last. It had an interesting plot, realistic and compelling protagonist, and fun secondary characters. It’s a delight I found this series.
The Fixer Upper is a pleasure to be along for the ride while a life, along with a house, gets renovated.
She always writes about friends and family that have your back, who aren’t stupid, and her heroines are hard workers. These are just plain fun stories to read. Plus she gets all the Southern elements down right.
Mary Kay Andrews’ characters are larger than life, which you wouldn’t expect from this genre. Authors of this nature are not my cup of tea. I prefer fast-paced psychological thrillers these days. But Mary’s books are a change of pace, which is why I find them so relaxing.
Her characters are ordinary people struggling with everyday challenges. At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of the characters in ‘Summer Rental,’ which was the first novel of hers that I read.
They sounded like lazy caricatures of real people. But I kept reading and grew to appreciate the story. Mary clearly exaggerated their personalities and attributes. But it made the story more impactful.
