Andrew Mayne’s creativity made me fall in love with his novels He has a unique way of weaving together a crime thriller to keep the readers coming back for more. His books are somehow quirky, original, and darkly entertaining with a great cast of characters. In the debut of the Jessica Blackwood series, Mayne shows Jessica’s attention to fine details and the drive to solve complex cases using her experience. I love how his work is versatile as he doesn’t stick to the same storyline and I enjoy every moment of his novels. Jessica Blackwood and The Naturalist series were my favorite though I found the rest addictive.
Mayne is a quirky character that writes quirky stories. Or, at the very least, from the outside, he seems so quirky. I prefer to investigate new authors before buying their novels. It blew my mind when I learned that Mayne was a magician and a prominent one at that. I’ve come across doctors, vets, soldiers, detectives, and even former mobsters that have written fiction.
But I have never heard of a magician who doubles as a writer. But in a way, it makes sense. Mayne’s novels seem cliché until you read them and realize that he has added an interesting spin to an old trope. For instance, Theo Cray from The Naturalist uses his skills as a computational biologist to solve crimes. I have never heard of computational biology, but the concept made the novel more entertaining.
Mayne does this with all his books. He finds a way of covering them in an exciting façade.
Andrew Mayne’s Underwater Investigation Unit book series was a discovery of mine at the local library. They offer such a fresh take on crime-solving in the depths of the ocean. Never predictable. Just when you think you have it figured out, he throws in twist and turns that keep you guessing till the end. A style that’s unique and keeps me reading. Well developed characters with their own complexities. Overall, the series is a must read. Looking forward to his new book this year the fifth in the series, Dark dive.
