Author & Book Playlists

Many authors have shared the music that they listen to while writing their next novels, while others suggest playlists to capture the mood of their stories. Some even create playlists through their characters.

We are compiling a list of all of these book-related playlists here – a growing collection of book-related playlists.

Here is a direct link to our Spotify Profile with all of the playlists in an easy-to-follow fashion.

11/22/63 Playlist
by Stephen King

In 2011, Stephen King released the novel 11/22/63. This novel primarily takes place in 1963, and is the story of a man who travels back in time, with the intent of stopping the JFK assassination.

In the afterword, Stephen King noted that there was a particular list of songs which he listened to while writing the novel. We have compiled them into a playlist, and Stephen suggests playing them in the background when hosting a book club discussing this epic novel.

Twilight Playlists
by Stephenie Meyer

In her autobiography, Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight novels, noted that she couldn’t write without music and that writing the books was a very visual, movie-like experience. Stephenie put together a playlist of the songs she listened to while writing each book in the series.

We have compiled the ultimate Twilight playlist, covering all the songs that she listened to writing Twilight all the way through to the novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. This playlist consists of over 130 songs.

Lucas Davenport Playlist
by John Sandford

In the 16th novel of the Prey/Lucas Davenport series, Broken Prey, Lucas is given an iPod by someone, and decides to use it to attempt to compile a playlist of the best 100 rock songs ever.

This playlist is below, and as per the character himself, every road trip playlist needs to begin with ZZ Top.

The Handmaid’s Tale Playlist
by Margaret Atwood

This playlist is inspired by both the 1990 movie, and the Hulu TV show, based on the 1986 dystopian fiction novel written by the legendary Canadian author.

Jurassic Park Playlist
by Michael Crichton

If you’re going to sit down and read the Jurassic Park series by Michael Crichton, can you think of any better background music than the scores from the movies?

This playlist covers all the Jurassic films, from Jurassic Park through Jurassic World: Rebirth. It adds an extra atmosphere to the books to make them even more intense.

The Hunger Games Playlist
by Suzanne Collins

A great soundtrack if you are looking to re-read the epic series of YA novels by Suzanne Collins.

Based off all of the Hunger Games movies, this playlist clocks in at over 3 hours and is excellent background listening while you race through the books.
