The Women’s Prize for Fiction has unveiled its 2026 shortlist, and it’s a strong lineup. The prize launched back in 1996 to help rebalance a literary landscape where major awards were overwhelmingly going to men, and it’s since grown into one of the most respected honours in fiction. Each year, it highlights the best English‑language novel published in the UK.
It’s always interesting to see how this shortlist takes shape each year, especially when it brings together writers at such different stages in their careers. Part of the fun is discovering new voices alongside familiar favourites, all gathered under one very big spotlight.
The winner walks away with £30,000 (about US$40,500) and a bronze statuette affectionately known as Bessie.
This year’s shortlist brings together debuts, indie favourites, and a few publishers making their first-ever appearance on the Women’s Prize stage, which is always fun to see.
And now, the nominees:
2026 Women’s Prize For Fiction Shortlist

- Dominion by Addie E. Citchens
A Black Southern family drama that explores how fear and patriarchy shape us – and how we break free of their hold – earning recognition as a nominee for major honours including the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.
- The Correspondent by Virginia Evans
A #1 New York Times bestseller about the solace we find in books and in the people who shape our lives from afar, exploring the hubris of youth, the wisdom of age, and the small mistakes and quiet kindnesses that define a lifetime.
- The Mercy Step by Marcia Hutchinson
A vivid, tender portrait of a young girl quietly pushing back against the forces that try to contain her, refusing to let the world decide who she’ll become.
- Kingfisher by Rozie Kelly
A lush, searching novel of queer desire and creative hunger, where the edges between connection and obsession grow dangerously thin.
- Heart the Lover by Lily King
A sweeping, emotionally rich love story about books, forgiveness, and the ties that define a life, also nominated for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and named a Best Book of the Year by Time Magazine.
Congrats to all six nominees. It’s a great mix this year!
We’ll find out the winner on Thursday, June 11th, in London’s Bedford Square Gardens, announced alongside the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction.
