The shortlist for the 2026 International Booker Prize is here, and it’s a great mix this year. We’ve got two debut novels, a book that first came out thirty years ago, and a couple of returning nominees – exactly the kind of variety this prize is known for. Since the International Booker celebrates fiction originally written in other languages, each title comes to us through the work of both an author and a translator, and the shortlist stretches across eight countries and five languages.
The books themselves cover a wide range of styles and stories, from long novels to short story collections, and they highlight just how much incredible writing is happening around the world. One of the goals of the prize is to get more readers picking up translated fiction, and it’s already helped shift reading habits in the UK. It also puts translators front and centre: the £50,000 prize is split evenly between the winning author and translator, and every shortlisted pair receives £5,000.
This year’s winner will be chosen by a panel of judges and announced on Tuesday, May 19th, 2026, at a ceremony at Tate Modern in London.
