Sophie Kinsella, Beloved Author of the “Shopaholic” Series, Dies at 55

In heartbreaking news for the literary world, it was announced today that Sophie Kinsella has passed away after a battle with brain cancer. She was 55 years old.

Born Madeleine Sophie Townley in London, Kinsella was best known for her beloved Shopaholic series, including Confessions of a Shopaholic (also titled The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic). Writing talent ran in the family – her sisters Gemma and Abigail Townley are also writers.

Kinsella studied at New College, Oxford, earning a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics before beginning her career as a financial journalist. Her fiction journey started under her real name of Madeleine Wickham, with her 1995 debut romantic comedy The Tennis Party (also known as 40 Love), which quickly reached national bestseller lists. Six more novels followed under her real name.

Her greatest commercial breakthrough came when she adopted the pen name Sophie Kinsella. Anonymously, she submitted the manuscript for The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic, introducing Becky Bloomwood – a financial journalist with a disastrous love of spending and an irrepressible charm. Reviewers praised Becky’s grounded humour and relatability, and readers embraced her wholeheartedly. The novel became a bestseller in both the UK and the United States, launching a phenomenon.

Kinsella would go on to publish eight sequels, beginning with Shopaholic Abroad (or Shopaholic Takes Manhattan), charting Becky’s misadventures, romances, and personal growth. The first two novels were later adapted into the 2009 film Confessions of a Shopaholic, starring Isla Fisher as Becky Bloomwood. While the film received mixed critical reviews, Fisher’s performance was widely praised, and the movie succeeded at the box office.

Beyond the Shopaholic series, Kinsella authored numerous standalone novels that became fan favourites worldwide, including Can You Keep a Secret?, The Undomestic Goddess, and I’ve Got Your Number. Her warmth, wit, and instinct for crafting flawed but lovable characters helped define an entire era of contemporary romantic comedy fiction. Her books, which sold more than 45 million copies globally, became cherished comfort reads for millions.

In 2024, Kinsella went public with her brain cancer diagnosis, expressing gratitude for her readers’ support and continuing to write while remaining optimistic throughout her treatment.

Her family has shared that she passed away peacefully on December 10th, 2025, surrounded by those she loved.

Sophie Kinsella leaves behind a legacy of joy, humour, and emotional honesty. Her stories made readers feel seen, uplifted, and less alone, transforming everyday anxieties into moments of laughter and hope. She will be deeply missed – but her words, and the happiness they brought, will live on indefinitely.
