“It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden and untimely passing of our dear friend and business partner, M.J. Rose,” the statement read. “We are completely shocked and heartbroken and will miss her beyond measure. Please keep M.J.’s friends and family in your thoughts during this difficult time.” The message was signed by Liz Berry and Jillian Stein, co-owners of 1,001 Dark Nights & Blue Box Press.
M.J. Rose grew up in New York City, where she cultivated a love of art and storytelling during visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park. Her early passion for books began by sneaking her mother’s novels behind her back.
After graduating from Syracuse University, M.J. pursued a successful advertising career. One of her commercials is featured in the Museum of Modern Art, a testament to her creativity and impact on the industry.
Author Larissa Ione expressed grief at her passing, writing, “This is just so heartbreaking. I’m so sorry for your loss. I know how important she was to you individually, and to the company. It’s weird because I just wrote out a holiday card to her today.” Numerous other authors also posted on social media to express their disbelief and sadness over the passing.
M.J.’s writing career began in 1999 with her groundbreaking novel Lip Service. The story follows Julia Sterling, a journalist whose life unravels after an assignment at a sex therapy clinic leads her into a world of forbidden desires. M.J. Roses novel “Seduction” won the best book of the year award from Suspense Magazine, announced in the December 2013 issue. That novel was also nominated that year in the Goodreads Choice Awards in the Best Fantasy category.
