After many false starts over the years, Jonathan Franzen‘s The Corrections is finally getting an adaptation.
The Corrections was released way back in 2001, and hit the publishing world by storm. It won the National Book Award in 2001 and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 2002. Famously, it was an Oprah’s Book Club selection, but he did not appear on the television show to promote it after calling Oprah’s Book Club “schmaltzy”.
The rights to the film were picked up right away in 2001, but failed to materialize time and time again. Numerous big stars and big-name directors, like Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt, Robert Zemeckis, and Noah Baumbach, have been attached over the years, but it has never reached the finish line until now.
Netflix won the bidding war for the rights with a full series order attached. The series will be directed by Oscar winner Cord Jefferson, most recently the director of the adaptation of Percival Everett‘s Erasure into American Fiction. The script will be written by Franzen himself, and Meryl Streep is set to star as Enid Lambert.
The Corrections has a plot that screams prestige TV drama. The story follows Enid Lambert, who, after decades devoted to her family, hopes to bring her children back home for one last Christmas. While her husband Alfred’s health declines, their three adult children struggle with personal and professional setbacks of their own. As Enid works to reunite them, each family member confronts unresolved tensions and the realities of their lives, shaping the dynamics of their long-estranged relationships.
With a series order in place, we should see this adaptation sooner rather than later.
