On October 17th, 2023, bestselling author John Grisham is set to release his latest thriller, The Exchange, which marks the return of Mitch McDeere, the protagonist from his blockbuster novel The Firm. If you were wondering what had become of Mitch and his wife, Abby, after they exposed the corruption at Memphis law firm Bendini, Lambert & Locke and fled the country, then wonder no more.
15 years later, Mitch and Abby are living in Manhattan, with Mitch working as a partner in the largest law firm in the world. The couple’s life takes a dramatic turn when Mitch’s mentor in Rome requests a favor, pulling him into the heart of a sinister plot with global repercussions. Once again, Mitch’s life is in danger, along with the lives of his colleagues, friends, and family.
The Exchange promises to be a fast-paced, suspenseful thriller, with Mitch McDeere using his wit and cunning to stay one step ahead of his adversaries. However, this time, there may be nowhere left for him to hide.
With The Exchange, Grisham brings back one of his most beloved characters, reintroducing Mitch McDeere to a new generation of readers and thrilling long-time fans.
The first novel in the Mitch McDeere series was adapted to the big screen in 1993. It was directed by Sydney Pollack and stayed mostly true to the original storyline except for the ending. In that movie, Tom Cruise played Mitch McDeere. Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, and Jeanne Tripplehorn also starred. Hunter was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie.
The Firm was the second novel Grisham wrote.
Also notably, there was a one-season TV show made based on The Firm, but taking place 10 years after the fact. In the TV show, McDeere had been living in witness protection for a decade until the Chicago mob boss died.
The Exchange releases on October 17th, 2023.
