The 2024 Booker Prize shortlist has been announced!

The 2024 Booker Prize shortlist features six diverse novels, with five of the nominees being women—marking the highest number of female authors in the award’s 55-year history. This selection spans across five countries, showcasing both established voices and exciting newcomers.

2024 Booker Prize Shortlist

  • James by Percival Everett (USA)
Everett offers a retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn through the perspective of Jim, the enslaved man. This novel, rooted in themes of identity, freedom, and justice, has resonated deeply with readers and critics alike.
  • Orbital by Samantha Harvey (UK)
This space-set novel takes place on the International Space Station and explores the human experience from a cosmic vantage point. Its blend of awe and introspection has captivated readers, and it is currently the best-selling title on the shortlist.
  • Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner (USA)
Set in rural France, Creation Lake follows a group of young people on a collision course with the French state. Kushner, previously shortlisted for the Booker in 2018, explores themes of history, rebellion, and prehistory in her latest work.
  • Held by Anne Michaels (Canada)
Michaels’ novel spans four generations, weaving together moments of connection and consequence, starting with a wounded soldier on a French battlefield during World War I. The poetic intensity of Held has been a highlight for the judges.
  • The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden (Netherlands)
This debut novel tells a quietly devastating queer love story set in a remote Dutch house in the 1960s. Van der Wouden is the first Dutch author to be shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
  • Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood (Australia)
Wood’s novel, partly inspired by her own childhood, takes place in rural Australia and is a meditation on memory, history, and existence. Written during the pandemic, the novel has been praised for its philosophical depth.

A Celebration of Human Complexity

The panel, chaired by artist and author Edmund de Waal, highlighted the “vastness of human experience” explored in these novels, ranging from personal histories to broader societal conflicts. This year’s shortlist has been noted for its daring experimentation and the range of perspectives it brings to contemporary fiction.
