Great news for readers who love to support small businesses—Bookshop.org now sells ebooks!
Bookshop.org is an online bookstore available to customers in the US and UK. However, instead of keeping the profits, they direct up to 100% of earnings to independent bookstores.
Since launching in 2020, Bookshop.org has paid out $35 million to indie brick-and-mortar booksellers, helping them stay afloat—especially during the pandemic. CEO Andy Hunter noted that the platform has been instrumental in keeping hundreds of stores in business. Now, with the addition of ebooks, indie shops have a new revenue stream, and readers have another way to support their favorite local bookstores.
“It’s not a good business strategy to say, ‘Come to us for your books, but when you need an ebook, go to Amazon,'” Hunter told Engadget’s Amy Skorheim.
Bookshop.org now offers over three million ebooks from all major publishers, with profits going to the store of the customer’s choice. If no store is selected, the earnings are added to a shared pool distributed among all participating bookstores and Bookshop.org.

To complement this launch, the company has also introduced a new e-reader app for iOS and Android. The app includes features like quote sharing, highlighting, annotations, text search, and customizable fonts. Ebook purchases must be made through Bookshop.org’s website to avoid steep in-app commissions from Apple and Google.
Additionally, Bookshop.org is working on compatibility with Kobo, so readers can enjoy their purchases on a dedicated e-reader. They hope to have this ready for Kobo users at some point this year. Long-term, they would love to add support on the Kindle as well. CEO Andy Hunter says they might even launch their own e-reader in the future.
