How To Tag Books

Tagging books on Book Notification allows you to organize your books into personal categories, making it easy to track and find them later.

Here are some common examples of tags users create:

  • Listened To: Noting that you listened to the audiobook version of the book rather than reading the text.
  • Recommendation – Gene: Noting that your friend Gene recommended the book.
  • Owned – Physical Copy: Noting you own a physical copy of the book.
  • Kindle Unlimited: Signifying you read the book via Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited service.
  • Editions: If you wanted to track that you read a certain edition of the book, such as a deluxe edition, or the hardcover or paperback.

You can create tags for virtually any reason and as many as you want. Want to note a book’s location (“Study Bookshelf”), who borrowed it (“Lent to Sheila”), or remind yourself it’s perfect for a particular time (“Christmas reads”)?

Your tags are entirely personalized to your preferences.

How To Create and Tag A Book:

Let’s walk through an example using the book “A Litter of Bones” by the author JD Kirk.

This is the first novel in the DCI Logan Crime Thrillers series and is one that I listened to. I like to make a note of the books I listen to, so will create an “Audiobook” tag.

  1. Select The Book: Click on the checkbox beside the book:

  2. Click “My Tags”: To switch to the My Tags tab.

  3. Create A New Tag: You’ll see the option “Add a tag”. Type in “Audiobook” and click Add:

The tag will appear, highlighted in green to show it’s active for this book.

Here it is in context with various other tags which are not applied to this book:

You only need to create a tag once. In the future, you can select any created tags which is explained below.

How To Tag a Book With An Existing Tag:

I’ve now read the second book in this series, “Thicker than Water”. I want to tag that as an audiobook as well. So I click the checkbox, and navigate to “My Tags” again. It is displayed like this:

I will then click the “Audiobook” tag and it will change to green and that is this book tagged:

Viewing Your Tagged Books:

  1. To view any books that you have tagged, visit My Books.
  2. On this page, a list of books that you have read are displayed like this:

  3. The tags you have created are above the list. Click the “Audiobook” tag and only books that I have tagged “Audiobook” will show up.

Adding Multiple Tags:

You aren’t limited to just one tag per book. Add as many tags as you’d like to help with detailed categorization.

For example, let’s add a few additional tags to “A Litter of Bones”.

  • Great Narrator: The narrator, Angus King, does a phenomenal job. He is one of those narrators that enhance the quality of a book with his work. I like to make a note of that so I can look up other works by that narrator, so I will want to create and add that tag.
  • UK Author: JD Kirk is also a Scottish author. I’m a big fan of authors from the UK, and I like to make note of which authors are from there as I generally prefer their writing style, so that will be another tag.
  • Audible: If I own a book, I like to keep track of exactly where. I own this book on Audible so I will want to create and tag that.
  • Profanity: As someone who runs book websites and is always recommending books, I get asked a lot about topics such as sex or profanity in books. So I like to create that tag so I can look up to see if a book has profanity, prior to recommending it.

I haven’t created these tags yet.

  1. Go back to “A Litter of Bones”, by clicking on the now checkmarked checkbox beside the book.
  2. Then I will click “My Tags” and it currently looks like this:

  3. I will then type in each Tag above and click “Add+” after each one, and the final result is this:

  4. Sorted alphabetically, all of the tags that are assigned to this book are now highlighted in green.

How To Remove Tags From A Book:

To remove tags from a book:

  1. Open up the Book Manage popup by clicking on the checkbox
  2. Click the “My Tags” Tab
  3. Click on any green tag
  4. The background will now change to white, and that book is no longer tagged.

How To Delete Tags Entirely

:

Let’s say I sold all my physical books and switched to ebooks only, so I want to delete the “Owned – Physical” tag I created earlier.

  1. Navigate to My Books
  2. Click the “X” beside the tag you wish to remove:

  3. A popup will appear.

Click “OK’ to confirm and that tag is removed from all of your books, and deleted entirely.
