Hello, everyone, and welcome to Book Notification Weekly Picks. I came across a blog by author Jo Walton who reads sixteen books at the same time. It’s not something that I would ever do, but it is definitely an interesting process. She is always reading some combination of: two fiction books, non-fiction, poetry, short stories, classical writing, translations, history books, letter collections, and travel memoirs. It seems like a lot of work, honestly, but she is reading from a much different perspective than most. It’s her craft, it’s research, and it’s enjoyment. We’ve been working on adding more author photos to their pages this week. It’s a funny thing: in another time, author photos were considered unnecessary and even decadent, but now they feel like a necessity. After adding hundreds and hundreds this week, my advice to authors is this: take pride in your photos! If it’s a necessity, and it is, then take it seriously. Don’t just download your employee-of-the-month photo from your last job five years ago. I’m sure you love your wife/husband/kid, but they didn’t write the book with you. Take something new and make it look good. Smartphones have amazing cameras; use them. That’s all I have for this week. Let’s get to the picks. Vince
