Hello, everyone, and welcome to another week of book picks.
This week’s editor’s pick is I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger. This is a unique one, as I usually wait until I finish a book before recommending it because you never know how the ending will shake out. However, this book has been so good so far that it doesn’t matter how it ends. It’s one of those that you don’t want to end because that means you can’t read it anymore. The book has a love for reading, the power of love, memory, and the will to go on in a cruel world. If you’re looking for lots of plot twists, this one isn’t for you. I won’t get into anything more spoiler-y than that, and instead end by saying that I believe it is well worth your time.
The funny thing about this book is that I found it by doing exactly what I talked about last week, looking through awards. It was nominated for the Goodreads Best Science Fiction book in 2024, and the description immediately caught my eye. It didn’t win, and honestly, I can’t imagine many being better from that year, but I look forward to finding out.
That’s all I have for this week. Let’s get to the picks.
