Hello, everyone, and welcome to another week of book picks.
I’ve started reading Thomas Pynchon‘s Shadow Ticket, and I’m having a great time. Thus far, it feels like a great author settling into old age and just having fun. I knew it was set in Milwaukee going in, but the sheer number of references to the city and its neighborhoods is staggering. At times, it almost feels like showing off how much he knows about Milwaukee landmarks. Why would you show that off? Who knows, but I’m loving it. I’m about halfway through, and it already seems like the best Pynchon entry point. It’s silly and fun, which is secretly the best thing about his books.
There was some disappointment in the early reviews, but they were mostly about what it wasn’t than what it is. That never quite sits right with me. Writing a novel is incredibly hard. Writing a novel that will meet everyone’s expectations might be impossible. In the end, I’d always rather read what the author wants to write than get upset about some hypothetical book that doesn’t exist. It’s much easier, too.
That’s all I have for this week. Let’s get to the picks.
