Welcome to Ask a Librarian, a new regular column at Book Notification. We receive a wide range of questions every day, so we’ve started compiling them into this section to assist anyone else who may be searching for the same answers. Hosted and written by our Chief Librarian, Claire Davis.
Q: Where can I buy the last 2 books of the Lincoln Hawk’s series written by Scott Connor? The Renegade Marshal and Reckoning at El Dorado. I just ordered The Honor of the Badge from Amazon, but I don’t see the last 2 that I want listed. — Steve
This is an interesting one. Scott’s Amazon listing is all over the place. “The Way of the Gun” in the title says it is Book 11 and published in June 2024, states it is “Book 5 of 5” in the Lincoln Hawk series listing. Then, there is a large print Lincoln Hawk listing.
Within that book, he lists “The Renegade Marshal” as coming out in March 2025, with no reference to “Reckoning at El Dorado”. For reference, he does mention a book titled “The Sons of Casey O’Donnell”, scheduled for November 2024.
However, Barnes & Noble does have a listing of The Renegade Marshal, which has the same book description as what is listed within “The Way of the Gun”, but with an April 25th, 2022 release date.
“Reckoning at El Dorado” is another interesting one because this book was released back in 2015, but it has a listing at Barnes & Noble stating it is book #12, and a May 23rd, 2022 release date. This book is not referenced in his book listing.
Our best guess is that this has to do with a change in publishing companies. We have been able to independently verify that both books already exist.
To answer the question, as mentioned above, Barnes & Noble offers them, and you can find copies on eBay, too.
Q: Why did Darcie Wilde write 2 series using the same name/character ? It is very confusing . Is there a specific reading order combining both Rosalind Thorne & Useful Woman? — Patricia
The Useful Woman mysteries are a follow-on from the Rosalind Thorne mysteries. So you would read the Rosalind Thorne series first, followed by the Useful Woman series. As far as we can see, there is no specific reason for this change, and so you can treat the first book in the Useful Women Mysteries, “The Secret of the Lost Pearls”, as the sixth book in the Rosalind Thorne Mysteries, etc.
Q: Are there book discussion questions for The Get Away Girls by Dee MacDonald? – wynnvan
The website Bedtime Book Reviews has various discussion questions related to this book. For example:
– Connie really enjoyed travelling without the responsibility of family. Would you feel the same way?
– Why is Connie delaying the reveal of her fourth child important to the story?
– Did you consider the newspaper that Connie got from Larry as significant when it occurred?
And many more. You can see the full list here along with a comprehensive review.
Q: I would like to know which order I should read the 7 books by Michael Reit? Should I read Warsaw Fury first? – mmouse
The series and books don’t crossover, so you can read “Warsaw Fury” by itself and then each series in the order they were written.
If you wished to read them in chronological order, based on the timeline that the books begin, it would be:
- 1938: Beyond the Tracks
- 1939: Warsaw Fury
- 1941: Orphans of War
- 1942: Tracks to Freedom
- 1943 (April): The Botanist’s Tracks
- 1943 (July): They Bled Orange
- 1944: Crossroads of Granite
Q: Is in the air tonight by Marie Force part of a series? — deedee
As of now, it is a standalone novel. However, the book has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, so hopefully, that will result in a sequel.
Q: Are there other books like Tormod Cockburn? What “genre” are these books listed under? Love them and need more! – Goodlaura
They are known as “Metaphysical Science Fiction”.
Other popular series within that genre include The Hunter’s Code by Oleg Sapphire & Yuri Vinokuroff, and the Starblood Series by Roman Prokofiev.
Q: Did Pat Winter ever write her book “Songs of the Big Canoe” listed in the last pages of her book Madoc’s Hundred? – gailjean
Unfortunately, that book was written but never released. She had researched it by spending time in Wales, and it even had a book cover, as displayed below:
However, it was never released. This was because the deal for the book was with Bantam Publishing. However, in 1992, Bantam and various other companies cut numerous potential book titles due to a change in tax law. One of the books was “Songs of the Big Canoe.” Unfortunately, despite being finished and clocking in at 190,000 words, it has never made its way online in any form.
Q: Are the two books by Marta Molnar in the Light & Life series connected? In other words, does book 2 continue the story of book 1? Or are they 2 separate stories that can be read in any order? From the description of the books, the only link seems to be the van Gogh brothers — sansell
Despite being part of the same series, both books can be read as standalone, and your reading enjoyment will not be affected.
Q: How come Harry Bingham has not written any books since 2017? — dfdifabio
Harry on Goodreads had said his focus was on other things, partially due to his Jericho Writers business growing. He hoped to revisit the series, and the last update in 2021 was that the seventh book in the “Fiona Griffiths” series was past the halfway point. Unfortunately as of this time, no book has been released.
Q: What’s happening with Sharpe’s Storm by Bernard Cornwell? It was due for release in December. –SteveH
Originally scheduled for release in 2024, Bernard wrote a Facebook post on August 21st, 2024, announcing it would not be released this year. He has had to go through a health-related ordeal this year, but had still finished the majority of the book. He was given the opportunity to participate in the Cape Cod Shakespeare Festival and that also set things back. There was then also an issue in relation to the story and the chronology, with the book taking place between Regiment and Siege, but an issue where the ending would overlap with the Siege ending. Long story short – it’s going to require an extensive rewrite and so will be out in 2025.
