Waterstones is a major chain of bookshops in the United Kingdom and other countries, founded in 1982. Since 2005, the company has presented a range of literary awards designed to highlight outstanding books and give winning titles additional support and visibility through its booksellers.

The awards include the Waterstones Book of the Year, the Children’s Book Prize (which also features category winners), the Debut Fiction Prize, the Scottish Book of the Year, the Irish Book of the Year, the Welsh Book of the Year, and the Waterstones 11.

The Waterstones Book of the Year was established in 2012, with any book published within the previous twelve months eligible for consideration.

The Waterstones Children’s Book Prize began in 2005, continuing the mission of its predecessor, the Ottakar’s Children’s Book Prize. Its purpose is to spotlight emerging talent, focusing on authors and illustrators with no more than two previously published books – whether for children or adults. In 2012, the prize expanded to introduce category winners in Fiction 5–12, Picture Book, and Teen, later renamed in 2016 to Younger Fiction, Illustrated Book, and Older Fiction.

The Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize was introduced in 2022 to champion outstanding new voices in fiction.

Waterstones launched its Scottish Book of the Year award in 2015, followed by the Irish and Welsh Book of the Year awards in 2022. These awards may reflect the author’s nationality or the setting or subject matter of the book.

From 2011 to 2013, Waterstones also presented the “Waterstones 11,” an initiative honouring eleven standout debut fiction authors each year.

Waterstones Awards F.A.Q.

Who decides the winners of Waterstones awards?

Winners are selected by Waterstones booksellers, who read widely throughout the year and champion the titles they believe offer exceptional storytelling, originality, and reader appeal. For regional awards, local expertise often plays a role, and some prizes incorporate shortlists or category finalists chosen by booksellers.

Are the Waterstones Awards open to all books?

Eligibility varies by award. Some, like the Waterstones Book of the Year, are open to any book published in the past 12 months. Others have more specific criteria. The Children’s Book Prize focuses on highlighting emerging talent with no more than two previously published books, while the Debut Fiction Prize is exclusively for first-time fiction authors. Regional Book of the Year categories recognize books connected to Scotland, Ireland, or Wales – either through the author or the book’s subject or setting.

Why are the Waterstones Awards considered influential?

Waterstones is one of the largest bookselling chains in the UK, so its awards often lead to a major visibility and sales boost. Books chosen by Waterstones staff frequently become breakout hits, and winners are prominently featured in stores and marketing campaigns. For children’s authors and debut writers especially, a nomination or win can significantly elevate their careers.

Do any of the awards have categories?

Yes. The Waterstones Children’s Book Prize includes three categories – Illustrated Book, Younger Fiction, and Older Fiction. Each category has its own winner, and one of them is ultimately chosen as the overall Children’s Book Prize winner.

Who decides the winners of the Waterstones awards?

Winners are chosen by Waterstones booksellers. Throughout the year, booksellers across the company read widely, nominate standout titles, and take part in discussions to determine shortlists and final winners. Their selections are based on factors like storytelling quality, originality, reader appeal, and the overall impact of the book. For regional awards – such as the Scottish, Irish, and Welsh Book of the Year – booksellers with local expertise often play an especially significant role in the decision-making process.
