The Shamus Awards are a set of awards presented by the Private Eye Writers of America for the best detective fiction of the year in both novel and short story format. The awards were first presented in 1982, and have become one of the most prestigious awards in detective and mystery fiction.

The categories included are the Best P.I. Hardcover Novel, Best First P.I. Novel, Best P.I. Paperback Original, and The Eye (Lifetime Achievement Award). There have also been awards for Best P.I. Series Character and Best Indie P.I. Novel.

The goal of The Eye Award is to honor an author who has made significant contributions to the private eye genre.

The Hammer Award recognizes a series character – rather than the author – for their impact on the genre and their longevity.

The Shamus Awards are unique in that they focus exclusively on private eye fiction, setting them apart from broader mystery awards like the Edgars. While many crime awards recognize police procedurals or general thrillers, the Shamus has its focus on independent investigators who operate outside of any agencies.

Over the years, the awards have honored both established legends and emerging voices in detective fiction. Past winners include icons such as Robert B. Parker, Sue Grafton, and Sara Paretsky, who helped define the genre for newer generations.

Because of their narrow focus and long history, the Shamus Awards are considered a top prize in detective fiction, signaling to readers that its winners deliver both authenticity and entertainment in private eye storytelling.
