Vincent Di Maio was a pathologist and expert on the subject of gunshot wounds. He was a board-certified clinical, anatomic, forensic pathologist and private forensic pathology consultant.
Vincent was born on March 22, 1941, in New York City. He was the son of Dominick Di Maio, the city's chief medical examiner.
He went to St. John’s University and the State University of New York. In 1965, he graduated from Downstate Medical School and got postgraduate training at Duke University, SUNY, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Maryland.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Army Medical Corps, and up until 2006, served as chief medical examiner of San Antonio, Texas, when he retired. He had over 40 years of experience working as a forensic pathologist.
Vincent was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, a professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in the Department of Pathology.
Vincent was a fellow of the National Association of Medical Examiners and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. In 2011, Governor Rick Perry appointed him to the Texas Forensic Science Commission.
Vincent wrote or co-wrote numerous articles related to forensic pathology and won several awards for his work, including the Outstanding Service Award. He gave expert testimony in numerous high-profile trials, including the George Zimmerman murder trial, Lee Harvey Oswald’s exhumation in 1981, the trial of Phil Spector for murdering Lana Clarkson, and provided expert opinion on Vincent Van Gogh’s death.
Vincent died at the age of 81 from complications of COVID-19 in September 2022.
