Picked up the The Dollangangers release for kindle, which has four of the “Flowers” novels, and it’s a fantastic set. The end of book four is sure to bring some tears to your eyes, no doubt. Read a couple years before and just wanted to check out the more stories about this family.
What an engaging story that keeps you wondering what is going to happen next in their story.
There is insight provided on how Olivia the grandma became so callous and so cold in the fifth novel of the series as well. These are an absolute must read series of novels.
I was first introduced to VC Andrews as a thirteen year old when I was surviving on a diet of Flowers in the Attic and green apple Jolly Ranchers. Since that time I can never look at VC Andrews novel without my mouth watering. The Flowers in the Attic novel has an intriguing story that tells of two siblings that fall in love. It makes for a strangely old fashioned and weird romance story. While I loved the chivalrous and handsome Chris, it is the Cathy the female evil with her hyper Gothic tendencies combined with other equally malevolent characters such as her grandmother and mother that are always so stunning and new each time I have read the story VC Andrews always takes me on an emotional roller coaster with all manner of thrills.
One thing I like about V.C. Andrews’ work is how she combines horror and family saga while revolving around forbidden love and family secrets. I loved the Flower in Attic film starring Louise Fletcher, Kristy Swanson, and Victoria Tennant. She explores the darkest and most disreputable side of family interactions and how blood can blind people at times. Some of the stories scared the crap out of me, and I don’t think I will ever eat anything with powdered sugar. The writer creates fictitious characters and develops them so well to fit in a real-life situation. Cathy and Chris are my favorite characters of all time in Dollanganger.
Although VS Andrews died many years ago, her stories still live on, both in her original writings and those done by her ghostwriter, Andrew Neiderman. Most famously known for the Dollanganger series which started with Flowers in the Attic, the Andrews name now covers multiple series, all having the same themes and attitudes. I started reading her books with Flowers, and became engrossed in the family struggles, so much that I finished the rest of the series one right after the other. Her other series is also worth seeking out, as are some of the ghost-written novels, but in my opinion, they vary in quality and don’t have the touch of Andrews original writings. There are also multiple adaptations of her work, most on the Lifetime channel; I have watched a couple but felt that they didn’t capture the intensity of the novels.
I cannot be the only one who doesn’t know what to make of ‘Flowers in the Attic’ as an adult. As a child, morbid curiosity kept me hooked. As an adult, it is easier for me to understand the horrific nature of the situation the characters had to endure.
For a time, during my childhood, this book was banned at my school. The decision was foolish because banning a book only makes kids more curious. My class had a copy that we passed around for a year until everyone had read it a couple of times.
I still think the book should be read. But I don’t know if I would recommend it to a younger reader. It requires an age rating.
