The man was abandoned by his mother at one and a half years and was rescued from a trash pile and adopted by a woman who named him Thomas Davidson.
In his childhood, his family moved around a lot, and he lived in Maryland, Colorado, Oregon, and Wyoming. When his parents divorced, he moved with his mother to Washington, D.C. As a young man, he took several odd jobs, including working at
IHOP and at the
Walter Reed Medical Center.
It was in 1984 that he launched his standup comedy career, performing in clubs in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. He got some attention when he won an 1987 amateur competition at the
Apollo Theater and then moved to North Hollywood, where he performed at the
Comedy Store and met with Martin Lawrence, the comedian.
Tommy Davidson had his biggest breakthrough when he was hired as an opening act by Robert Townsend, and soon enough, he was appearing at high-profile concerts and shows. However, it was when he made an appearance on
The Arsenio Hall Show that he would be known all across the US.
He was one of the original actors in
In Living Color, the sketch comedy show in which he showcased his impersonations and energetic style. His career as an actor also includes voice work, film, and television roles. Outside of that, he has spoken about the challenges of being an adopted black child in a white household.
In 2020, Tommy Davidson published his memoir
Living in Color, in which he reflects on his journey from being picked up in the trash to becoming a massive comedy star.
Brought up in a loving white household, he never knew of racism until he was a young adult. He then got a role in
Living Color where he played a role in breaking down the walls of race that had been in show business and entertainment for years.
In the work, he shares about creative tension on set, celebrity encounters, and anecdotes from behind the scenes. He also reflects on his early days on Showbiz and working with stars such as Halle Berry and Spike Lee, even as she explores the intricacies of cultural belonging, family, and identity.
