Tomas Alfredson

Tomas Alfredson (Hans Christian Tomas Alfredson) was born on April 1st, 1965 and is currently 60 years old. Tomas Alfredson was born in Lidingö, Sweden.

Tomas Alfredson is a Swedish movie director best known for directing Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (the 2011 version) and Let the Right One In (released 2008).

He is the brother of director Daniel Alfredson and the son of actor/director Hans Alfredson.

Tomas’ dad was rarely home, and he was mostly raised by his mom. But he would participate in his dad’s movie productions each summer. It was probably the main way for them to reach one another, and Tomas thought it was great fun.

Tomas’s career began at Svensk Filmindustri, where he worked as an assistant. He was involved with the creation of TV4, the Swedish television channel, where he worked in the entertainment department. One of his first successes was the Swedish adaptation of Fort Boyard.

Then he moved on to Sveriges Television, creating a TV series that starred Ika Nord, who later appeared in Let the Right One In.

Nord claimed Tomas was just 25 yet still incredibly knowledgeable already.

He directed Bert, based on the Bert diaries, this popular series of teen novels written in the diary form. Bert: The Last Virginwas a feature film that Tomas also directed based on the series.

He joined Killingganget, the comedy group, as a director in 1999. Tomas knew that they were just a little funnier than the others, and just a bit more thorough. One of the first things he directed was Screwed in Tallinn, a mockumentary, which depicts this group of Swedish bachelors that travel to Estonia attempting to find Estonian girlfriends.

Let the Right One In, John Ajvide Lindqvist’s debut horror novel was released in 2004. After Tomas read the novel, he wanted to adapt the story into a movie, and approached the author about it. There was already a crowd banging on the guy’s door to adapt the movie, so Tomas was about the 40th in line.

As they met, he knew of Tomas, and liked his previous work and they got along incredibly well. The story is of a 12 year old boy being bullied that befriends a child vampire during the early 1980s in Blackeberg, Sweden. Besides directing, Tomas edited the movie with Dino Jonsater.

After working on the movie, he announced that he’d be taking a break for the foreseeable future. He’d grown tired of the Swedish TV and film industry, which he thought was drained of gravity, power, and courage.

Even though he’d gotten many offers from Hollywood producers, he was hesitant to leave his kids, home, and all the colleagues he depends on in order to be good.

But in 2009, he signed on to adapt Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which premiered in 2011.

He has received the Guldbagge award for Best Direction for Four Shades of Brown and Let the Right One In.
