Timothy F. Geithner is an American former central banker that served as the 75 United States secretary of the treasury under Barack Obama from 2009 to 2013. From 2003 to 2009, he was President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, following his service in the Clinton administration.

Beginning in March of 2014, he served as chairman and president of Warburg Pincus, this private equity firm that is headquartered in New York City.

From 1985 to 1988, he worked for Kissinger Associates in Washington, D. C., after which he joined the International Affairs division of the U. S. Treasury Department.

Since he was President of the New York Fed and Secretary of the Treasury, he had a key role in government efforts to recover from the Great Recession and the 2008 financial crisis.

While at the New York Fed, he helped manage the crises that involved Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, and the American International Group; as Treasury Secretary, he oversaw the allocation of $350 billion under the Troubled Asset Relief Program, which was enacted during the previous administration in response to the subprime mortgage crisis.

Timothy also managed the administration’s efforts to restructure regulation of the nation’s financial system, efforts to spur recovery of the mortgage market and the automobile industry, demands for tax reform, protectionism, and negotiations with foreign governments on global finance issues.
