Theodore Gray
Theodore Gray is a science author and the co-founder of app developer
Touch Press. His book
Elements is about the elements of the Periodic Table, taking something most of us thought was just memorization and boredom and transforming it into an amusing, fascinating, and educational read.
It is a beautiful book with clear, detailed photography on semi-matte black paper, which makes the elements appear to float in space. It has a two-page spread for each element 1 through 100, with the left-hand side featuring a full image of the element in its native mineral or refined form, or of an item made of the material. The right-hand page has a few paragraphs of information/trivia about the element, along with various images of items from the author’s collection made of the given element.
Gray provides a basic rundown of what an element is and also what the periodic table is. There is also a page that explains the physics behind the table's shape, the importance of the atomic emission spectrum, and what “electron filling order” is.
Elements start with Hydrogen and end with Ununoctium. It also includes the spectre of Uranium and its evil twin, Plutonium. There is also carbon, without which no life would exist on Earth and iron, which we use in abundance. Luckily, for nonprofessionals, Gray does this in a way that is both amusing and understandable. He knows his audience isn’t professional chemists, but people who are fans of science and, for some reason, never got into the details of it.
Much of Gray’s discussion on each element is somewhat humorous, which makes the book an excellent read for laymen interested in Elements.
Gray closes
Elements with words about his passion for collecting elements, a picture of himself with his collection, a full-colour fold-out of the elements and their photos, and a helpful index. His writing is brilliantly entertaining.
