The chronological order of the Shannara series is: Word & Void, Genesis, Legends, Original Shannara (aka Sword of Shannara), Heritage, Voyage, High Druid, Dark Legacy, Defenders, and Fall. However, it must be noted that this is not the recommended reading order and reading the books in chronological order will spoil the series. So read Original Shannara series, then Heritage etc following the list below.

I started reading the Shannara novels backwards – yes I am that weird. I watched the Shannara chronicles on TV first before I started reading the books.
I wanted to read the most popular of the novels in The Sword of Shannara but then gravitated towards First King of Shannara which is the prequel. Having read the prequel I have since read much of the Shannara series and loved it.
Terry Brooks and especially his Shannara Universe has been compared to the JRR Tolkien universe which is quite something.
I have never fashioned myself an expert in fantasy but I know that reading one in a series often gets me craving to read an entire series which is what happened here.
Nonetheless, like the many fantasy novels the quest aspect in the Shannara novels is what had me hooked as I would enjoy losing myself for several hours in the magical lands of Shannara.
I have a bone to pick with MTV. They ruined the Shannara Chronicles. To be clear, I disagree with people who dismiss this entire adaptation as a dumpster fire. Season 1 was incredibly entertaining. I say that as someone who had zero expectations.
I watched the first episode and laughed out loud at the CGI. But the actual story was compelling, and I stuck with it. The season did not disappoint. I don’t know what went wrong with season 2, but they need to fix it.
Terry Brooks doesn’t deserve this. MTV desecrated his story. Personally, I think Hollywood should reboot the series as a movie. But I doubt that will happen anytime soon.
