Susan Faludi
Susan Faludi (Susan Charlotte Faludi) was born on April 18th, 1959 and is currently 67 years old. Susan Faludi was born in Queens, NY, USA. Faludi attended Harvard University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Susan Faludi is an American feminist, journalist, and author. In 1991, she received the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism for her report on the leveraged buyout of Safeway Stores, Inc., which was praised for its exploration on the human impact of corporate finance. In 2016, she won the Kirkus Prize for her book. In the Darkroom, which was also a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in Biography.
In the Darkroom by Susan Faludi is her fourth book and also her most personal work. Shortly after the early 2000s, Faludi reconnected with her estranged father, a Hungarian immigrant and Holocaust survivor who had returned to Hungary after the fall of the Berlin Wall and was undergoing gender reassignment surgery.
The book explores her father’s complex life. It revisits his childhood as a Hungarian Jew, his daring survival during World War II, his escape from communist Eastern Europe to Brazil, and later his move to America, where he married and started a family. Known under the name Steven Faludi, he lived as a mountaineer, a skilled linguist, and an accomplished photographer, fascinated with appearances and transformation.
Despite his achievements, he remained an enigma to his daughter. He was distant, often lecturing, and sometimes violent, which led to divorce and estrangement in the 1970s. His later transition to Stefánie Faludi only deepened the mystery, challenging Susan’s understanding of him and leaving her unsettled even at the end of his life.
Intertwined with this personal story is a broader history of Hungary, particularly its relationship with its Jewish community. Faludi recounts how Hungarian Jews, once largely assimilated, faced brutal persecution during the Holocaust and later contended with a resurgence of far-right, anti-Semitic politics in modern times. Ironically, Stefánie aligned herself with some of these reactionary forces, distancing herself from her Jewish identity.
The book avoids a straightforward timeline, instead moving fluidly between moments in her father’s life, Hungary’s history, and Faludi’s own investigation. This structure highlights central themes of identity and contradiction. Can identity be chosen or escaped, or is it imposed? Does transitioning challenge gender binaries or reinforce them? Is Judaism a faith, a cultural inheritance, or an identity forced upon people? Are nations made of history and people, or myths and stories?
By exploring her father, Faludi inevitably reflects on her own family, though she reveals little of herself, remaining firmly in the role of observer. The narrative builds subtly, circling back on itself like a Möbius strip, leaving unresolved questions about reconciliation between father and daughter.
At times, the father at the center of the book appears deeply flawed, self-absorbed, and difficult to connect with, even as Faludi uncovers the layers that shaped him. Yet the interplay between intimate family history and sweeping historical forces keeps the story compelling. The writing is richly detailed, often lyrical, and draws striking parallels, such as between Hungary’s political fractures and her father’s transformation.
In the Darkroom is a bold and thought-provoking exploration of identity, history, and family. It beautifully blends memoir, biography, and cultural commentary into a powerful and unsettling narrative.
