Steven Toast

Steven Toast is a fictional character that stars on Toast of London. He’s played by Matt Berry, who created the character with Arthur Matthews. All of the episodes of the series are directed by Michael Cumming. Each series has 6 episodes each.

Steven Toast is a middle aged and eccentric actor with a checkered past that spends way more time dealing with his own problems offstage than he does performing on it. He considers himself a successful actor despite him having an obviously failing career.

When viewers first meet Steven, he’s just divorced, and is living with Ed (his middle-aged friend) and Ed’s elderly mistress, named Goodhouse.

Steven’s starring in a play so horrible that nobody dares say its name, with protesters outside the theater.

They shot a pilot for the series that aired in 2012 on Channel 4. Despite mixed reviews, they got a series, and the first episode was broadcast in 2013, and brought Matt a BAFTA Award for Best Male Comedy Performance.

Three series under the name of Toast of London were broadcast on Channel 4, while the US series airing on BBC Two, with series 2 and 3 being shot at the West London Film Studios. IFC aired the show in the United States.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, audio skits were made, and uploaded to a YouTube channel.

The fourth series was titled Toast of Tinseltown, and was set in the United States.

Toast on Toast: Cautionary Tales and Candid Advice is a must have read for all budding actors, and non-actors alike. In this ‘how to act’ manual and part memoir, Steven pulls on his varied and vast experiences, providing readers with invaluable insight into his journey from performing in school plays to RADA, and from ‘It’s a Right Royal Knockout’ and to the Colony Club.

Along the way, he reveals the secrets behind his success. He discloses how to brush up on and expand technical and vocal skills, how to nail a professional voiceover, and how you deal with difficult work experience staff in a recording studio. He reveals the dangers of typecasting, describes the often ruthless struggle for ‘top billing’, and shares all kinds of awesome nuggets of advice.

The end result is this book which will inspire and educate anybody that wants to tread the floorboards. It’ll also inform (and entertain) anyone that just wants to learn what a jobbing actor’s life is truly like.
