Stephen Jay Gould was an evolutionary biologist, paleontologist, and communicator who made a lot of contributions to evolutionary theory.

The son of Eastern European Jewish parents, he grew up in Queens and, from a very young age, developed an interest in paleontology after his parents took him to the American Museum of Natural History.

As a scholar, Stephen Jay Gould teamed up with his colleague, Niles Eldredge, to develop the “punctuated equilibrium theory,” arguing that evolution occurs in quick bursts rather than as a gradual, slow process.

In addition to developing the theory of punctuated equilibrium, he has held a range of academic positions and authored works such as Ontogeny and Phylogeny. He also published several essays for Natural History magazine, which were ultimately made into award-winning books.
