Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola (Sofia Carmina Coppola) was born on May 14th, 1971 and is currently 54 years old. Sofia Coppola was born in New York, New York, USA. Coppola attended Mills College, the California Institute of the Arts, and the Art Center College of Design.

Sofia Coppola is an American actress, screenwriter, director, and producer. She won an Academy Award in 2003 for the Best Original Screenplay and in 2010 won the Golden Lion Award which made her the first American woman to win the award. In 2017, she directed The Beguiled movie, which stars Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst.

Coppola’s book Archive gives us a visual glimpse into her creative world. One photo shows four blonde girls lying on a bed, sad, as if they share a secret. A cross hangs above them with a pink lace bra draped over it. Another collage features Scarlett Johansson wandering through rainy Tokyo, looking lost. Kirsten Dunst is seen reclining on a blue chaise in a grand French palace wearing a white gown and surrounded by pink pastries. A woman filming her wears a red T-shirt, denim skirt, and Adidas sneakers.

The book has a bright pink cover and contains photos of Coppola’s Hollywood office which is filled with posters, torn magazine pages, and stacks of books and papers. It is as a personal collection of behind-the-scenes materials from her films, something she began in 1999 while making The Virgin Suicides. Over the years, she saved scripts, notes, photos, and costumes, made them into a habit of archiving each project.

Some may view Archive as unnecessary and argue that watching Coppola’s films should be enough. However, it offers insight into her artistic process especially her focus on women’s stories and perspectives beyond the traditional male gaze. It also traces her journey into filmmaking from books adaptations to writing original scripts.

The Virgin Suicides section explores teenage girlhood’s awkwardness and foreshadows the characters' tragic fates. Coppola describes Dunst as having an all-American cheerleader look but also a deep, mysterious side.

Archive also showcases Coppola’s films as reflections of different stages in her life. Lost in Translation is also remembered through behind-the-scenes photos. It includes a letter Coppola wrote to Bill Murray begging him to take the role. Coppola also explores Marie Antoinette as a bold mix of history and modern style. Even her lesser-known films, like Somewhere and The Bling Ring, are featured which showcases her evolution as a visual artist.

The final chapter of Archive explores Priscilla, Coppola’s film about Priscilla Presley. Coppola continues to explore her signature themes of girlhood, family struggles, fame, and privilege. She expresses her personal connection to the character through a letter she wrote while working on Marie Antoinette and describes how she relates to a young woman trying to find her identity in a world of luxury and expectations.
