Shirley Temple Black was best known as an American businesswoman, actress, dancer, singer, and later diplomat. During her childhood, she was one of the most popular child actors in the US.
It was in 1932 that Shirley Temple began acting at only three years old. Her big break came with the feature film
Bright Eyes, which brought her international notoriety. Black acted in several hits after that such as
Heidi and
Curly Top and won the Juvenile Academy Award in 1935.
Black made the most of licensed merchandise including clothing, dishes, and dolls all of which featured her wholesome image and made a lot of money. As she grew into adolescence, her popularity began to wane. Nonetheless, by the time she retired aged 22 in 1950, she had acted in more than 43 films over her career.
In 1958, Shirley Temple acted in an anthology-inspired fairytale adaptation. She also made guest appearances on several shows during the 1960s. In addition to her work as an actor, she was also a member of the boards of several organizations and companies such as the
National Wildlife Federation,
Del Monte Foods, and the
Walt Disney Company.
In 1969, she was appointed to represent the US at the
United Nations General Assembly. She would then hold several ambassadorial positions in Africa, Europe, and North America.
Over the years, she won many honors and awards including a
Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild in addition to
Kennedy Center Honors.
Child Star: An Autobiography came out in 1988. In the work, Shirley tells of what life was like for a child star who had the adoration of the masses during the Depression era, right up to the 1940s.
She describes how she had a truncheon over her head since her father signed a cleverly worded contract from Fox that made her more like a slave to the company than a partner. Shirley chronicles how hard life as an actor was that she rebelled by getting married to a hard-drinking man when she was just 17.
