Barrett showed her creative side when she was very young. She used to keep a journal that she filled with nonsense verses which she used to regal her family with during family lunches. She continued the habit of journaling even into her adult life.

Logies and things would start to spiral from there. When she met Verity Lambert, she finally had the opportunity to be a director on
The Boys From the Bush the TV series, and would work on television as a director for much of the 1990s and the 2000s.
In her personal life, Shirley Barrett had two kids all daughters with her husband Chris Norris who she met at a party while she was a student. For much of her life, she lived in Sydney up to the time she died of cancer in 2022 aged 61.
Rush Oh! is a work that Shirley Barrett published in 2015. Mrs Hopkins, which she published in 2024. In this one, she tells of an idealistic schoolmistress who could not have been more unprepared for her new school. Soon enough, she is forced to acknowledge that she will have to use unconventional methods to reach her lost charges even as she deals with ghosts from her past too.
