    My brain almost broke when I heard that Sharon Kay Penman wrote The Sunne in Splendour, lost the manuscript, and then wrote the book again from scratch. The Sunne in Splendor is 900+ pages. As someone who has attempted to write fiction, I can tell you that writing and then rewriting a book of that size is a disturbingly difficult undertaking.

    And yet she pulled it off. I started re-reading her books when she died in 2021. Her passing was a shame. She was a truly gifted writer. I cannot think of any other author that embodied the historical fiction genre as powerfully as she did. Her books were so informative.
