Ruth Westheimer
Ruth Westheimer (Karola Ruth Siegel) was born on June 4th, 1928. Ruth passed away July 12th, 2024 at 96 years old. Ruth Westheimer was born in Wiesenfeld, Bavaria, Germany. Westheimer attended The New School where she received a Master of Arts in Sociology, Teachers College, Columbia University where she received a Doctor of Education in Family-Life Studies and University of Paris where she received a Bachelor of Arts. She also attended Cornell University.
Ruth Westheimer was a popular American therapist who moved to the United States from Germany. She was the daughter of Orthodox Jewish parents who had to be sent to an orphanage in Switzerland to get away from the Nazis, even as her parents lost their lives in the Holocaust.
Following the events of the Second World War, she moved to Palestine then under the control of the British where she joined a Jewish militia fighting for Jewish independence. Ruth would then move to Europe and then the US where she trained as a sex therapist.
In 1967, Ruth Westheimer got married to Manfred Westheimer, a man who also survived the Holocaust. She would then work in private practice and as a college professor before she launched her career in media.
Westheimer became very popular during the 1980s as the host of
Sexually Speaking, a radio show where she answered questions from listeners who called into the show. Her expertise and popularity would soon spread to books, television, and even board games.
During her peak in the 1980s, she was the host of many TV shows such as
The All New Dr. Ruth Show,
Ask Dr. Ruth, and
The Dr. Ruth Show. Westheimer would also be invited to shows and late-night programs such as
Late Night with David Letterman and
Hollywood Squares.
While she was very popular and famous, she continued to live in the same apartment in New York’s Manhattan for more than half a century until her death.
Ruth Westheimer published her first work
Dr. Ruth’s Guide to Good Sex in 1983. The work discusses a range of sexual problems in addition to topics about sexual enhancement. Ruth writes about the basics of sex, to sex for the elderly, and sexual exercises, as she also provides a range of quotations and anecdotes.
In 1985, Ruth Westheimer published her second work,
First Love. In this book, she discussed critical issues issues to do with sexuality among teens. She also examines topics such as the emotional and psychological impact of homosexuality, rape, contraception, incest, pregnancy, and venereal disease.
Ruth Westheimer published her third work
Dr. Ruth’s Guide for Married Lovers in 1986. The work offers practical and sympathetic advice on the emotional and physical components of sexuality in marriage.
