Russell T. Davies is a Welsh screenwriter and TV producer. He’s best known as the original head writer and showrunner of
Doctor Whofrom 2005 to 2010.
Russell was born in Swansea, and had aspirations as a comic artist before he focused on being a screenwriter and playwright.
Growing up, his household never shut the TV off until after closedown, and he was immersed in dramas like
Doctor Who and
I, Claudius. One of his first memories was from when he was 3, and seeing the
Doctor Who serial called The Tenth Planet from 1966. He was also an avid cartoonist and comics enthusiast, buying series like
Peanuts and
Asterix.
Russell took classes in portable buildings after the main buildings were deemed unsafe. It led him to create science fiction, mystery, and conspiracy thriller stories about the main building.
He also immersed himself in books like
The Crystal Mouse by Babs Hodges Deal and
Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence. He liked
The Crystal Mouse so much that he could see it echoing in everything that he wrote.
When he was 14, he joined up with the West Glamorgan Youth Theater Company. He was talented, popular with the other kids, and considered an all rounder.
He submitted scripts to youth theater even during his studies at Oxford, including a play called Box, which was about the influence of TV which featured Russell’s penchants for misdirecting the audience and mixing together drama and comedy.
After graduating from Oxford University, he joined CBBC, the children’s department at BBC, on a part time basis and held various positions. This included creating
Century Falls and
Dark Season.
He would eventually leave the BBC for Granada Television, and in 1994 he would start writing adult TV drama. Early scripts generally explored concepts of sexuality and religion among various backdrops.
Dark Season is about one ordinary day at school taking a sinister turn once the mysterious Mr. Eldritch promises one free home computer for every single pupil. These are computers which conceal a horrible power. Just three teenagers Reet, Marcie, and Thomas are alert to the danger here.
Before long, they are caught up in a conspiracy of kidnaps, brainwashing, and a threat to the entire human race. Even worse, the school itself is hiding ancient secrets buried under its foundations, as the awesome Behemoth rises out of its tomb, intent on the destruction of all. Eldritch has summoned his Dark Season, which heralds the world’s end.
