Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy

Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy (Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald) was born on July 22nd, 1890. Rose passed away January 22nd, 1995 at 104 years old. Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy was a socialite, philanthropist, and the matriarch of the Kennedy family. She was deeply embedded in the lace curtain Irish-American community in Boston.

During her teens she became acquainted with Joe Kennedy, her future husband, whom she met as their families were vacationing at Old Orchard Beach in Maine. He was the older son of Patrick Kennedy and Mary Hickey. Joe would court Rose for over 7 years, much to her dad’s disapproval.

She felt it was a major regret that she never went to Wellesley College, after her dad forced her into going to Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart, which didn’t grant degrees at that time.

Rose campaigned for her three sons (Robert, John, and Edward) from 1946 until 1976 in their political races for the United States House of Representatives, the United States Senate, and the presidency. Besides being asked to speak at events, she got asked to give more and more interviews for books and TV, and to pen articles about her life, her faith, or family.

She was a devout Catholic throughout her life. Even after she turned 100, she rarely missed Sunday Mass and kept up an extremely prudish exterior. This is after she needed a wheelchair to get around after suffering from a stroke in 1984.

She died at the age of 104 from pneumonia complications in Hyannis Port on January 22, 1995.

Times to Remember is a fascinating chronicle of eight decades rich in courage, drama, and history.

The Kennedy family mystique has given rise to a mountain of print, from serious works of history to tabloid exposes. However, like Rose herself notes, this charmingly intimate and beautifully written memoir is the sole book about the Kennedys that’s ever been penned by a Kennedy. Her intention with writing it, beyond just setting the record straight, was to create a lasting and vivid chronicle of 8 momentous decades, of all the influential and fascinating folks that passed through the lives of her family and the events (both small and large) which shaped their worlds.

She relates her upbringing as the descendant of Irish immigrants and a prominent Boston politician’s daughter. A brave and spirited woman that raised 9 children as she supported her husband’s venture into politics, film, finance, she describes the major successes and tragedies of her life: the importance of her faith and the sources of her strength.

Here is a timeless book: a historically important document which clearly conveys the personality of its remarkable author. Making great use of thousands of family letters and pieces of memorabilia and touching personal photos.
