Ron DeSantis is an American politician from Florida who has been a leading conservative and the governor of Florida since 2019. Between 2013 and 2018, he served in the House of Representatives and made a bid for the U.S. presidency in 2024 but was ultimately unsuccessful.

While in college, Ron DeSantis became a JAG officer after being commissioned in the U.S. Navy. During his time in the Navy, he worked in operations at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and later served in Iraq, where he supported a SEAL mission in Ramadi, Fallujah, and much of Al Anbar province while advising a Navy SEAL commander.

For his military service, he earned the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. After leaving the military, Ron DeSantis worked as a federal prosecutor, gaining recognition for pursuing and convicting child predators. He remains registered with the U.S. Navy Reserve.

In 2012, he was first elected to Congress, representing Florida's Sixth District. During his time in Congress, he fought to cut taxes through the No Pay/No Budget Act and gained popularity for refusing health insurance and pension plans, believing that politicians should not receive special deals.

He was responsible for drafting legislation to prosecute sexual assault in the military and sponsored a bill to end the secret taxpayer-funded slush fund that Congress members used to pay off victims of sexual harassment under the table.

Ron DeSantis is married to Emmy Award-winning TV anchor Casey DeSantis. Together, they have two daughters, Mamie and Madison, and one son, Mason.

He published his debut novel, Dreams From Our Founding Fathers, in which he explores the principles the founders of the United States used when creating the Constitution. He asserts that President Obama and his allies have deviated from these principles, resulting in a constitutional crossroads, which he believes stems from policies relying on progressive thought and left-of-center influences that have made America more like European governments, prioritizing the state over the individual.

In 2023, Ron DeSantis published The Courage to Be Free, which serves as a combination of a policy manifesto and a political memoir. In this work, DeSantis chronicles his rise from working-class roots to becoming the governor of Florida, emphasizing his conservative principles and leadership style. Ultimately, he presents Florida as the perfect template for governance while critiquing bureaucratic overreach and mainstream media.
