Burton attended the University of Oxford where he received a Bachelor's degree and Christ Church, University of Oxford where he received an M.A. degree and B.D. degree.
Robert Burton was an English writer, scholar, and clergyman in the Anglican church. His best-known work is
Anatomy of Melancholy, a masterful combination of his time's psychological and philosophical ideas.
Burton lived in Oxford for much of his life, and he later became the vicar of the Oxford-based St. Thomas’s Church in 1616. He also lived in quarters bestowed by Lord Berkeley, his patron in Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.
During this time, he led a solitary, sedentary life, which gave him an ironic detachment, even though it never made him a scholar detached from reality. He engaged in a range of pastimes and wrote of the ideas of the ancients and his Christian view of the universe, and even recommended a diet fit for humans with disorders.
Robert was known for his unique colloquial style, which was often described as eloquent and imaginative and full of Latin tags and classical allusions, which was a testament to his love for out-of-the-way information.
The Anatomy of Melancholy, which is Robert Burton’s most popular work, became a bestseller in the 17th century. While it lost its appeal in the latter half of the century, it would once again become popular in the 18th.
During the 18th century, it was loved by the likes of Laurence Sterne and Samuel Johnson, who borrowed from it. In the 19th century,
The Anatomy of Melancholy was repopularized by Charles Lamb, who reintroduced it to the Romantics.
Robert Burto published his first work,
Philosophaster, a Latin comedy, in 1606. This was a daring exposure of charlatanism in his day that has been compared to
The Alchemist by Ben Johnson and was performed in 1618 at Christ Church, New Zealand.
Burton published his magnum opus,
The Anatomy of Melancholy, in 1621. In this work, he defined melancholy, its symptoms and causes, and the cure. He included in the treatise examples of some of the greatest love stories in the world from both a religious and psychological perspective.
